-Master Interview: David Razowsky-
Dave Razowsky is one of the great improvisors and teachers of the art in its long history. A veteran of two Out of Bounds and two Out of Bounds West festivals, he has been a part of our history, as well. We recently got the chance to ask him a few questions about improv, and the answers are conveniently displayed below.Out of Bounds: You have been an improv teacher for quite some time now, but what do you feel like you still have to learn from it? David Razowsky: Improv is a practice, not unlike yoga or meditation. I continue to learn why things work and why the rules are there. I also learn new ways to break rules and reinforce the idea that all improv is acting. I also learn that it's not easy to direct people who aren't ready to be vulnerable. I'm sorry if that sounds negative. Out of Bounds: Who have been your inspirations in doing improv? David Razowsky: I'm always inspired by Dave Pasquesi. He's smart, funny, vulnerable, and a wonderful actor. Out of Bounds: What characteristics do you think all great improv shows share? David Razowsky: The only mistake you make in improv is casting, so all great improv shows share one thing: great casting. They're an ensemble that enjoys, respects, celebrates, challenges and supports each other in the most wonderful ways. Out of Bounds: What were your recollections of Out of Bounds in Austin when you came in 2008? David Razowsky: I love the improv community in Austin and OOB is all about support, encouragement, growth and fun. Yes, fun. Labels: improv, interviews, masters - Master Interview: Bill Arnett - Bill Arnett is a mainstay of the Chicago improv scene who teaches and performs regularly at iO as well as many other various outfits around town. We sent him some questions over email and, by gum, he answered them for us. Enjoy some wisdom, now, won't you?Out of Bounds: What is the most important thing you can do while improvising? Bill Arnett: You mean while onstage in the act of improvising? Hmmm... I think the stock answer is listen but I think the phrase has been used so much that it's lost all meaning. I would say the best thing to do is to slow down and participate. You and your partner are building a world with each line you speak. Live in that world. Participate in it to the fullest. Figure out the simple truths. Bill Arnett: Better, I hope. Some changes in the last 10 years are more stylistic changes and they will come and go. Like after Pulp Fiction came out every show tried to adopt it's non-linear plot structure. The more resilient change has been a general increase in the level of acting. Fewer flippant scenes, more textured scenes. In ten years I bet improv groups will become smaller (2-5 people) and rely more on the members personalities as opposed to gimmicks. Just a guess. Short from fever could sweep the nation again. Out of Bounds: You taught and performed at Out of Bounds in 2008. How was that for you? Mad ups to Bill for giving us a few seconds of his time and for teaching and performing in the 2008 festival. You can find him teaching regularly at iO in Chicago and posting videos online with his longtime group Maximum Party Zone. You can find his popular blog on improvisation here. And most importantly, you can talk to slash hire him at bill@billarnett.com.
