Bill Arnett Intensive: The Power of Keeping it Real

So often we see and try to create fun, imaginative and weird situations in our work. But weird can't exist without normal. Humor can just as easily be generated with a genuine response then with a crazy one. Never be at a loss for words, boldly support your imaginative ideas and find the humor in attacking scenes from character rather than from plot. It's how the best play.

Bill Arnett has been improvising and teaching at i.O. Chicago (formerly Improv Olympic) for the last nine years. He performs in the weekly Armando Diaz all-star show and as a sketch writer and performer with Maximum Party Zone, he has performed for an HBO showcase and optioned a screen play. As a teacher and director he has traveled around the country giving workshops for colleges, festivals and independent theaters. Bill writes a popular improv blog at www.iochicago.net

Charna Halpern says "Bill Arnett is one of the best teachers at iO. He is so brilliant at analyzing what is necessary for a scene to work and has a no holds barred approach in his teaching. Yet he is kind in his notes while always telling it like it is. He has found the right balance between critical and nurturing."

Micah Philbrook: Playing Faster and Stronger

This course consists of two halves that build on each other. The first section is on quick scene creation, and the second is on quick but rich character development.  In a lot of today's improvised theatre offerings, fast paced montage formats are very common. A misconception is that faster play equals weaker or less "longform-y" improv. pH productions specializes in fast paced long form improv, and we believe that faster does not equal weaker just as slower does not equal better. Instead, both are viable playing styles with their own strengths and weaknesses. This workshop is designed to give improvisors the tools needed to excel at faster scene play. In part one, improvisors learn the pH production method of quick scene creation, Platform Tilt Resolution. Using this technique, performers can quickly get to the "what" of a scene, allowing more time to explore and heighten, thereby having more discoveries, while still serving as a quality scene in a faster paced show format. In part two, performers will learn the Attribute Trinity method of character generation, focusing on aspects of body, mind, and voice, to create strong, engaging, believable characters on the fly. At the end of the workshop, improvisors will be able to play faster, with more confidence in their content creation as well as their character generation, leading to stronger more developed scene work.

raised in the deep south of baton rouge, louisiana, micah has studied theatre since the tender age of ten. he moved to chicago in late ninety nine to pursue the art of improvisational theatre, where he completed the training centers at the improv Olympic, the Annoyance, and the Second City Conservatory. micah can be seen regularly with the harold team Athens, intermittently with the independent quintet The New American All-Stars, and rarely with the internationally acclaimed duo !ATTENÇION! most importantly, micah is a founding member of pH Productions and is proud to play with the best crew in town, pH.

David Razowsky: Connecting Through Viewpoint Elements

While teaching for Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre's school, Second City veteran David Razowsky was exposed to--and immediately taken with--the power of Anne Bogart and Tina Landau's Viewpoints training, and he immediately saw the power Viewpoints plays in improv theatre. Razowsky's master class will focus on how by using elements of Viewpoints actors can instantaneously connect to their playing environment, to their partners and, most importantly and most strongly, to themselves. Be prepared to see your craft in a new light, be prepared to see with new eyes, and be prepared to be rejuvenated.

David Razowsky, former Artistic Director of Second City LA, was a cast member of ten Second City revues where he created material with Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris, and Jeff Garlin, among countless other performers. David has directed Second City Mainstage’s No, Seriously, We’re All Gonna Die, Second City LA’s Encino Evil, The Second City Untitled Project, The Second City Detroit's acclaimed 19th Nervous Breakdown, and The Second City National Touring Company. David is an adjunct faculty member of the California State University, and has just returned from directing their mainstage production, Beeswax, a performance of original monologues created through improvisation by CSU students. He worked with Steppenwolf Theatre in 2005 on Balm in Gilead for the California State Summer Arts Festival, and directed two of Amsterdam’s Boom Chicago Theatre’s productions-- RockStars, and their critically acclaimed Live at the Leidseplein - Your Privacy is Our Business. Both Boom shows were remounted for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. David has directed the Los Angeles premier of Hellcab at The Hudson Theatre, What’s Wrong with Getting Laid and Dairy Farm at The Comedy Central Stage at the Hudson Theatre. He is a co-founder of Chicago’s Annoyance Theatre.

Bill Stern: It's Okay

Denials, questions, bridging, waffling, pimping, talking heads... it's okay. Del Close, Keith Johnstone, Mick Napier... fine. Long form, short form, midform, narrative, abstract... cool, whatever. You should be able to play how you want to play, and that's okay. This workshop will be a series of exercises, covering many schools of thought, designed to help you feel comfortable in virtually any scene. There are tools and skills that one can use to improvise in any style, with anyone else, on any stage. Let's practice, and I promise, it's gonna be okay.

Bill Stern is a native Austinite living, performing, and studying improv in Chicago where he has regular shows at iO and the Playground. He has completed the iO training center and is currently studying at the Annoyance theater. Bill has been a performer in multiple touring improv groups. He's toured to 24 states and over 50 cities, teaching many workshops along the way. Since 2000 he's spent much of his improv career experimenting with format and style, bringing innovative improv shows to tens of festivals and theaters around the country.

Stan Wells: Transforming

This workshop will use the transformation exorcise as a basis for creating five to ten minute scenarios. We will focus on when to end a scene and how to quickly find the physical and mental focus that flows into the next scene. Since transformations are a non-stop, free flowing game the object of the workshop will be to get the improvisers to let go and find the moment when they are instantaneously in agreement about who they are, where they are and what they are doing.

Stan Wells is the founder and Artistic Director of The Empty Stage Theatre in Los Angeles. He's been teaching improv for over 25 years and is the director of The Transformers (Trans4merz.com) founded over 15 years ago. He has directed The Groundlings and created the "clap-in" style of improv used by many of his groups at The Empty Stage (emptystage.com) as well as The Groundlings, Crazy Uncle Joe Show.
